Kitab al-Kafi, compiled by Muhammad ibn Yaqub al-Kulayni in the tenth century, is the principal hadith collection of Twelver Shia Islam, gathering sayings and teachings attributed to the Prophet Muhammad and the Shia imams. As one of the tradition's own foundational primary texts, it is the correct and authoritative source for what Twelver Shia Islam itself holds to be the sayings its scholarship is built on. Its limit as a source for this atlas is the same as any believing tradition's own scripture: it states the tradition's own teaching rather than offering independent historical verification of every attributed saying, and traditional Islamic scholarship itself distinguishes hadith of varying reliability within such collections using its own internal methods, a distinction a reader relying on this text alone should keep in mind.
