Paul Demieville's Le concile de Lhasa, Une controverse sur le quietisme entre bouddhistes de l'Inde et de la Chine au VIIIe siecle de l'ere chretienne, published by Presses Universitaires de France in 1952, is a classic scholarly study of the eighth century Council of Lhasa, in which representatives of Indian gradualist and Chinese instantaneous approaches to Buddhist enlightenment debated before the Tibetan court, working directly from the Dunhuang manuscript sources that record the controversy. Demieville was among the twentieth century's foremost Sinologists and Buddhologists. Its strength is that direct manuscript grounding in the Dunhuang material, still cited as the reference study of the council over seventy years later. Its limit is that later scholarship has continued to refine the picture, questioning how cleanly the debate can be summarized as a single decisive event with one side simply defeated, so a claim about the council's outcome should be checked against that more recent reassessment alongside Demieville's founding study.
