Denis MacEoin's short academic reassessment of the widely repeated claim that twenty thousand or more Babis and Baha'is were killed in nineteenth century Iran. Working from the documented major confrontations at Shaykh Tabarsi, Zanjan and Nayriz, MacEoin puts the total killed across the 1848 to 1852 Babi persecutions at a little more than three thousand at most, arguing the higher figures trace to court chroniclers and later community retelling rather than to an independently verifiable count.
