Alexandra David-Neel's Magic and Mystery in Tibet, Claude Kendall, 1929, is a primary travel memoir, not a scholarly ethnography. Its strength is that it is the actual source of the Western word tulpa, her own rendering of the Tibetan sprul-pa, drawn from her own extended time in Tibet and among Tibetan practitioners. Its limit is that it is one traveler's own account and interpretation of practices she witnessed and was taught, filtered through her own understanding, not an independent scholarly study of Tibetan Buddhist thought forms.
