Milagros: Votive Offerings from the Americas

Martha Egan's Milagros: Votive Offerings from the Americas is a specialist study of the small metal charms left at shrines across Latin America and the American Southwest, written from years of firsthand collecting and fieldwork rather than archival theology. Its strength is exactly that groundwork: close description of milagro forms, regional variation and the devotional logic of leaving a token shaped like the afflicted body part or granted request. Its limit is scope, since it is a material culture and folk art study rather than a doctrinal history, and it says comparatively little about how any single diocese or clergy has formally regarded the practice. Treat it as a reliable guide to what milagros look like and how ordinary petitioners use them, not as a survey of official church teaching on votive offerings.
