The Ming Shi (History of Ming), compiled under the Qing court and completed in 1739, is the official dynastic history of the Ming and the standard historical record of the Yongle Emperor's reign, including his religious patronage across Daoist, Buddhist and popular cults. Its strength is that it draws on the Ming court's own extensive archives, compiled with the resources and time of a settled imperial project. Its limit is that it was compiled by the following Qing dynasty, with its own political reasons to shape the memory of the Ming rulers it describes, particularly a usurper emperor.
