A Minghui.org retrospective published 18 December 2023, marking the twenty fourth anniversary of the 1999 ban, reporting that as of 20 November 2023 at least 5,010 Falun Gong practitioners had been confirmed to have died in the persecution over the preceding twenty four years, drawn from Minghui's own ongoing case by case documentation of individual deaths. The article states plainly that the actual death toll is believed to be far higher, given the extreme censorship in China surrounding these deaths, and that many thousands more cases remain unconfirmed.

Reliability Tier
1
Reliability tier 3: the Falun Gong movement's own documentation site, an interested party's case by case count of its own persecuted practitioners rather than an independent tally. Used here for the movement's own stated death toll and its own account of the persecution it reports, not as independent verification of that toll.
Notes
Minghui.org is the primary Falun Gong practitioner run documentation platform, maintaining the most systematic public tally of confirmed deaths in the persecution, built case by case from practitioner and family reports. It is not an independent or neutral outlet: it is run by adherents of the movement it documents. Given China's information controls around these deaths, the confirmed count it publishes is presented, including by Minghui itself, as a documented floor rather than a complete total, which is why it is recorded here as the minimum rather than a single settled figure. 1
