Mohism (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry)

This is Chris Fraser's Mohism entry in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, first published 21 October 2002 and substantively revised 1 September 2024, maintained by the Metaphysics Research Lab at Stanford University. As a peer-reviewed, continuously revised scholarly reference by a specialist in early Chinese philosophy it covers the Mohist school founded by Mozi, its consequentialist ethics and its distinctive logical and epistemological doctrines. Its strength is that Stanford Encyclopedia entries are written and periodically revised by recognized specialists under editorial oversight, unlike a general encyclopedia. Its limit is that it surveys Mohism as a whole school of thought, so a claim needing close textual analysis of one specific Mohist text needs a source engaging that text directly.
