Section X of the Basis of the Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church, the church's official governing statement on social and personal morality, adopted by the Jubilee Bishops' Council, 13 to 16 August 2000. States marriage is the union of man and woman, a sacred mystery reflecting Christ's relationship with the Church. States the Church insists that spouses should remain faithful for life and that Orthodox marriage is indissoluble, citing Christ's words that what God has joined together, no one should separate. Names specific grounds recognised for divorce, including adultery, a spouse's falling away from Orthodoxy, prolonged disappearance, endangerment of a spouse's life or health, and abandonment, among others added later. States that after a legitimate church divorce a second marriage is allowed to the innocent spouse, that the party at fault may remarry only after repentance and an assigned penance, and that a third marriage carries a longer penance still under Saint Basil's rules.
