The primary launch presentation for Myanmar's 2014 Population and Housing Census religion results (Census Report Volume 2-C), released by the Department of Population on July 21, 2016, reporting 87.9 percent of Myanmar's population as Buddhist once the census's own estimate of non-enumerated Rakhine State residents is included (89.8 percent among only the population actually enumerated), against 88.8 percent in 1973 and 89.4 percent in 1983, the two prior censuses the report presents for comparison. The report is explicit that Rohingya residents largely went uncounted and that the non-enumerated Rakhine population is assumed, for this estimate only, to be entirely Muslim.
