Napoleon and the Pope: The Story of Napoleon and Pius VII, E. E. Y. Hales's 1962 academic monograph from Eyre and Spottiswoode, is a mid twentieth century scholarly history, by an English Catholic historian, of the relationship between Napoleon and Pope Pius VII, including the 1801 Concordat, its unilateral 1802 Organic Articles addendum, and the parallel arrangements made for the Protestant churches. Its strength is that it is still cited on university reading lists on the period. Its limit is that it is an older standard history rather than a recent peer reviewed monograph, and its Catholic historian's own sympathies are worth bearing in mind when weighing its account of the Concordat's aftermath.

E. E. Y. Hales's Napoleon and the Pope: The Story of Napoleon and Pius VII, Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1962, the middle tier reflecting a mid twentieth century scholarly history still cited on university reading lists but predating the modern peer review standard this atlas reserves for the top tier, and written by an English Catholic historian whose own sympathies are worth weighing against his account of the Concordat's aftermath. NotesA mid-twentieth-century scholarly history, by an English Catholic historian, of the relationship between Napoleon and Pope Pius VII, including the 1801 Concordat, its unilateral 1802 Organic Articles addendum, and the parallel arrangements for the Protestant churches. Still cited in university reading lists on the period; a Tier 2 older standard history rather than a recent peer-reviewed monograph.
