Nostratic: Sifting the Evidence

Nostratic: Sifting the Evidence, edited by Joseph Salmons and Brian Joseph, is a scholarly linguistics volume examining the Nostratic hypothesis, the proposal that several major language macrofamilies including Indo-European, Afroasiatic and others descend from a single common ancestral language many thousands of years old. The volume gathers essays from linguists genuinely skeptical of and genuinely sympathetic to the hypothesis, reflecting the fact that Nostratic remains a minority, actively disputed position within historical linguistics rather than an accepted mainstream reconstruction, unlike better-established families such as Indo-European itself.
