A peer-reviewed article in the Journal of Medieval History in which Pegg states directly the argument developed at length in The Corruption of Angels: that the received picture of Cathars and Albigenses as a coherent dualist church with bishops, a rite and cross-regional structure owes more to the categories inquisitors used to interrogate Languedoc's good men and good women than to how those communities understood themselves. It is the single most concentrated statement of the revisionist position and the natural citation for the debate itself, distinct from the fuller narrative the book provides.

1
Pegg's direct peer-reviewed statement of the revisionist argument, arguing that "Cathars", "Albigenses" and an organised heretical church are categories built by inquisitors and later historians rather than plain descriptions of what existed in Languedoc.
