Nora K. Chadwick and Victor Zhirmunsky were specialists in oral epic tradition, and this Cambridge University Press book is their comparative academic study of the oral epic traditions of Central Asian Turkic and Mongolic peoples, examining shared structural features and historical connections across a wide range of individual epic cycles. Its strength is genuinely comparative scholarship built on real command of the individual epic traditions being compared, rather than a survey assembled at second hand from other scholars' summaries. Its limit is its age relative to a still active field of Central Asian epic scholarship, later fieldwork and textual recovery have added to and in places revised the corpus this study worked from, so a claim about one specific epic tradition's current scholarly understanding benefits from checking against more recent, tradition specific research alongside this foundational comparative study.
