A Portrait of American Orthodox Jews

Pew Research Center, August 26, 2015, drawing on the 2013 Survey of U.S. Jews

A Pew Research Center analysis of Orthodox Jews drawn from its 2013 Survey of U.S. Jews, published August 26, 2015, finding that about six in ten U.S. Orthodox Jews (62 percent) are Haredi (sometimes called ultra-Orthodox), while roughly three in ten (31 percent) identify with the Modern Orthodox movement, with the remainder identifying with other Orthodox subgroups or none in particular.

Pew's own dedicated analysis of Orthodox Jews within its 2013 Survey of U.S. Jews, published August 26, 2015, the one Pew release with a large enough Orthodox subsample to break the group down by movement; the same standing already given to Pew's Jewish Americans reports elsewhere on this axis. Pew's own later 2020 Jewish Americans study states explicitly that its Orthodox subsample was too small to repeat this breakdown, so this 2013-fielded report remains the axis's only source for the Modern Orthodox share specifically.
