Pious and Rebellious: Jewish Women in Medieval Europe, Avraham Grossman's 2004 study from Brandeis University Press, is a scholarly history of Jewish women's religious and social life in medieval Ashkenaz and Sepharad, by an established historian of medieval Jewish society. Its strength is systematic use of rabbinic responsa and communal records to reconstruct women's lives from sources not originally written to document them. Its limit is that, like any history built from records authored mostly by men about women, it reconstructs women's experience at one remove from their own voices, a limitation the book itself addresses directly rather than concealing.
