Pistis Sophia, edited by Carl Schmidt and translated by Violet MacDermot, published in 1978 by Brill in its Nag Hammadi Studies series, is the standard critical edition and English translation of the Coptic Gnostic text preserved in the Askew Codex. Schmidt's edition and MacDermot's translation are the reference scholarly instruments for this text, used throughout Gnostic studies. Its limit is that it is a translation of a late antique text of debated authorship and date, so any claim about who wrote Pistis Sophia or when needs to be attributed to scholarly argument rather than treated as settled by the edition itself.
