Randolph Byrd's 1988 study in the Southern Medical Journal on intercessory prayer in a coronary care unit is a peer reviewed clinical study. Its strength is that it is a real, published, randomized trial that reported a positive association between remote prayer and certain clinical outcomes. Its limit is that its methodology and statistical handling have been criticised in the medical literature since publication, and its results have not been reliably replicated in later, more rigorously designed trials; the atlas reports what the study found without treating that finding as settled.
