Reclaiming African Religions in Trinidad: The Socio-Political Legitimation of the Orisha and Spiritual Baptist Faiths

Reclaiming African Religions in Trinidad: The Socio Political Legitimation of the Orisha and Spiritual Baptist Faiths, Frances Henry's 2003 academic study from the University of the West Indies Press, drawn from years of Trinidad fieldwork, traces the Orisha and Spiritual Baptist faiths' move from suppression to legal recognition, including the 1917 Shouters Prohibition Ordinance, its 1951 repeal, and the 1999 legal recognition of Orisha marriages. Its strength is that it is squarely the fact's own subject, drawn from sustained direct fieldwork. Its limit is that it focuses on these two faiths specifically; other Afro Trinidadian religious traditions need their own dedicated sources.
