Res Gestae Divi Augusti

Augustus's Res Gestae Divi Augusti is a primary ancient autobiographical text; the atlas records no publisher and no exact publication year because it survives as an inscribed monumental text from antiquity rather than a single dated modern publication. Its strength is that it is the emperor's own first person record of his achievements, not a later historian's account of his reign. Its limit is the ordinary one for any ruler's own account of his own achievements: it is Augustus's own carefully curated self-presentation for posterity, not a neutral historical record, and should be read alongside independent ancient historians where the claim matters.
