Revolt in Southern Rhodesia, 1896-97: A Study in African Resistance, Terence O. Ranger's 1967 book from Heinemann, was the foundational scholarly account reframing the Ndebele and Shona risings as coordinated African resistance rather than mere unrest. Its strength is that it opened the modern historiography of the subject and remains widely cited. Its limit is that later historians have revised parts of Ranger's account, particularly the degree of coordination he attributed to spirit mediums, so it should be read as foundational rather than final.
