News Report

A June 2026 Athens News (en.rua.gr) report that the EU's ESPA program allocated 5.3 million euros, signed by Central Macedonia regional governor Athena Aidona, for seven restoration projects across six Mount Athos monasteries (Caracal, Kutlumush, Xenophon, Great Lavra, Simonopetra and St. Paul's), covering structural repairs, retaining walls, workshop conversions and elderly-monk care facilities. Notes over 163,000 pilgrim visits in the first half of 2026 and states the sum is only a small fraction of the preservation need.
