Runenkunde

Klaus Duwel's Runenkunde, published by J. B. Metzler and read here in its fourth edition of 2008, is the standard German language handbook on runic writing, covering the elder futhark, the Anglo-Frisian and younger futhark traditions and the corpus of surviving inscriptions. Duwel was among the twentieth century's leading runologists and the handbook format itself signals its purpose, a systematic reference synthesizing a field's accumulated findings rather than arguing a single new thesis. Its strength is exactly that comprehensiveness and its standing as a teaching and reference text across four editions, revised as the field's consensus moved. Its limit is that a handbook favors the field's settled readings over its live disputes, and the meaning of individual short or damaged inscriptions, especially those read as invoking deities or magical function, remains contested among runologists in ways a synthesis text will state more confidently than the primary debate itself allows.
