Runes (Reading the Past), R. I. Page's 1987 short survey from British Museum Press, is a general reader's introduction to runic writing that states plainly there is no attested continuous tradition of runic divination reaching back to antiquity. Its strength is that Page was a leading runologist and this survey remains a clear, authoritative statement on the point. Its limit is that it is a short general readership survey rather than an exhaustive scholarly treatment, so a deeper claim about runic epigraphy should be checked against Page's own longer academic work.
