Salamander: The Story of the Mormon Forgery Murders

Linda Sillitoe and Allen Roberts' Salamander, published by Signature Books in 1988, is the standard journalistic and historical account of the Mark Hofmann Mormon document forgeries and the 1985 bombings Hofmann carried out to cover his fraud. Its strength is that both authors reported extensively on the case as it unfolded and drew on trial records, investigative reporting and interviews with figures close to the events. Its limit is that it was written close to the events it describes, before some material later entered the historical and legal record, so a claim resting on a detail later revised by subsequent scholarship on the Hofmann case should be checked against that more recent work as well.
