The Shinto Directive is the official order issued on 15 December 1945 by General Headquarters, Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, formally disestablishing State Shinto and separating religion from the Japanese state during the postwar Allied occupation. As the occupation authority's own primary legal document it is the correct source for what the directive actually mandated, in its own official language, rather than a later paraphrase of postwar Japanese religious policy. Its limit is that it is a legal and administrative order, not a historical analysis, so a claim about the directive's actual effects on Japanese religious practice, or about how thoroughly State Shinto was in fact dismantled versus merely reorganized, needs a scholarly historical source to interpret alongside this primary text.
