Smith's Archaeological Survey of India catalog records the Jain stupa, sculptures and donative inscriptions recovered from the Kankali Tila mound at Mathura, including inscriptions dated to the fifth and seventh regnal years of the Kushan emperor Kanishka, among them the gift of an image of Vardhamana, Mahavira's given name, made by a laywoman named as the companion of a donor called Sethiniha, the earliest of the mound's inscriptions historians can attach to a specific regnal year rather than to legend.
