The Song Shi (History of Song), compiled under the Mongol Yuan court in 1345 from Song dynasty court archives, is the official dynastic history of the Song and carries the standard biographical notice of Chen Tuan among its accounts of recluses and hermits. Its strength is that it draws on the Song court's own surviving records and earlier compilations. Its limit is that it was compiled more than three centuries after Chen Tuan's death by a foreign dynasty working at speed from inherited materials, and its treatment of a figure already wrapped in legend during his own lifetime cannot be taken as documentary.
