A St. Olaf College documentation project on the 1970 decisions of two of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's predecessor bodies to admit women to the pastoral office: the American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church in America both voted in 1970, with Elizabeth Platz ordained in the Lutheran Church in America on 22 November 1970 and Barbara Andrews ordained in the American Lutheran Church one month later, on 22 December 1970. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, formed by the 1988 merger of these two bodies with the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, inherited the practice unbroken.
