Tannisho (A Record in Lament of Divergences)

The Tannisho, A Record in Lament of Divergences, attributed to Yuien, is a primary medieval Japanese text recording the teachings of Shinran, foundational to Jodo Shinshu Buddhism; the atlas records no publisher and no exact publication year because it survives through manuscript transmission rather than a single dated modern edition. Its strength is that it is close, disciple recorded testimony to Shinran's own teaching, written to correct doctrinal divergences the compiler saw spreading after Shinran's death. Its limit is the ordinary one for any disciple's record of a teacher's oral teaching: it is Yuien's own memory and framing of what Shinran said, not Shinran's own written words.
