Robeck Jr. is a historian and himself a Pentecostal minister and scholar, and this Thomas Nelson book is his academic history of the 1906 Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles, the event from which the modern global Pentecostal movement traces its origin. Its strength is that Robeck combines archival documentation, contemporary newspaper accounts, participant testimony and his own standing within Pentecostal scholarship, writing as an insider to the tradition who nonetheless holds the events to ordinary historical scrutiny rather than retelling them as unexamined origin legend. Its limit is that, as a study centered on the revival's founding years under William Seymour's leadership, it does not attempt a full history of Pentecostalism's subsequent global spread and doctrinal diversification, which needs separate, broader sources to cover.
