The Chukchee, Waldemar Bogoras's ethnography published in three parts between 1904 and 1909 in the memoirs of the Jesup North Pacific Expedition through E. J. Brill and G. E. Stechert, is still the standard scholarly reference on Chukchi religion and shamanism. Bogoras conducted the underlying fieldwork himself as part of the landmark Jesup Expedition, and the study's authority rests on that direct, extended firsthand ethnographic contact. Its limit is its age and the colonial era context of the expedition itself, which later ethnography has supplemented with Chukchi voices and perspectives Bogoras's own generation did not center.
