The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (institutional record)

This is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints's own custodial record concerning the Salamander Letter, describing the Church's 1984 purchase of the document through an intermediary and its subsequent handling of the item once it emerged as one of the Mark Hofmann forgeries. As the institution directly involved in that acquisition, its own account is the correct source for its own governance decisions and its record of the transaction. Its limit is that it is the institution's own account of an episode in which it was itself a party and, briefly, a victim of fraud, so a claim about the Church's judgment or conduct during the affair benefits from being read alongside the independent legal and journalistic record of the Hofmann case, which is extensive given the scale of the criminal prosecution that followed.
