Winroth argues Scandinavian rulers and chieftains adopted Christianity for real political, economic and cultural reasons of their own rather than as passive recipients of missionary pressure, and treats the Jelling stone's own famous claim, that Harald Bluetooth made the Danes Christian around 965, as a royal political statement rather than a settled description of a completed popular conversion.
