The Dutch Revolt (Parker)

Geoffrey Parker's standard scholarly narrative of the revolt of the Habsburg Netherlands against Spanish rule, first published in 1977 and revised in 1985, drawing on Spanish and Netherlandish archival sources. Parker was a leading historian of early modern Spain and the Dutch Revolt. Its strength is a synthesis that weighs the revolt's religious, fiscal and constitutional causes against one another rather than asserting a single cause, and it explicitly addresses the historiographical debate over how far Calvinism drove the uprising as against taxation and the defense of local privileges against centralizing Habsburg rule. Its limit is that, as a single volume narrative spanning the full eighty years, individual campaigns and sieges receive less depth than a dedicated regional study would provide.
