Barre Toelken's The Dynamics of Folklore, in its 1996 revised edition from Utah State University Press, is a standard academic textbook in folklore studies. Its strength is that it states, directly and specifically, the classic folklorist objection to Joseph Campbell's monomyth theory, that Campbell built his pattern only by selecting stories that fit it and leaving out others that did not. Its limit is the ordinary one for a textbook summarizing a field's consensus: it represents the discipline's own settled critical view of Campbell's method rather than a fresh original argument.
