The Foreign Vocabulary of the Qur'an, Arthur Jeffery's 1938 study, originally his 1929 Edinburgh doctoral thesis, is the standard philological study of non-Arabic loanwords in the Quran, tracing firdaws to Old Iranian by way of Greek and the Septuagint's use of that Greek word for the garden of Genesis.
