Engseng Ho's The Graves of Tarim, published by the University of California Press in 2006, is a scholarly study of the Hadrami sayyid diaspora from the Yemeni valley of Tarim, tracing how genealogies, texts and religious litanies travelled with them across the Indian Ocean world. Its strength is that it is a peer-reviewed university press monograph combining archival, textual and ethnographic method. Its limit is that its close focus is the Hadrami diaspora specifically, so a claim generalizing its findings about diasporic religious transmission to an unrelated diaspora elsewhere needs to be checked rather than assumed to transfer.
