Susan Jacoby's The Great Agnostic: Robert Ingersoll and American Freethought, Yale University Press, 2013, is a scholarly study. Its strength is that it is a well researched account of Ingersoll and Gilded Age American freethought from an established author of intellectual history. Its limit is the ordinary one for a single scholarly biography: it argues Jacoby's own reading of Ingersoll's significance, which is influential but not the only scholarly assessment of his place in American religious history.
