Thomas Thompson's The Historicity of the Patriarchal Narratives, published by de Gruyter in 1974, is a major work of biblical scholarship. Its strength is that it is one of the two studies, alongside Van Seters' work, credited with dismantling the earlier Albright synthesis that dated the patriarchal narratives to the second millennium BCE. Its limit is that it argues one side of a still-debated question in biblical historiography, and later scholarship has continued to revisit the dating question it reopened.
