The Huguenot Struggle for Recognition

N. M. Sutherland's The Huguenot Struggle for Recognition, published by Yale University Press in 1980, is a scholarly history of French Protestants' decades long campaign for legal toleration in sixteenth century France, culminating in the 1598 Edict of Nantes, built from the French state and religious archival record of the Wars of Religion. Sutherland was a specialist historian of the French Wars of Religion whose earlier work on the period is also widely cited. Its strength is that specialist grounding and the Yale University Press peer review process. Its limit is that the book concentrates on the political and legal struggle for recognition rather than on Huguenot theology or worship itself, so a claim about Reformed doctrine or liturgical practice among French Protestants needs a source addressing the religious content directly rather than this account of their legal and political history.
