Michael Pearson is a historian of the Indian Ocean world, and this Routledge book is his general scholarly history of the Indian Ocean as a connected zone of trade, migration, and cultural and religious exchange across its coastal regions. Its strength is that it synthesizes a wide range of specialist scholarship into one accessible overview of a genuinely vast subject, written by a recognized specialist in the field. Its limit is exactly that breadth: as a broad synthesis it necessarily treats any one region's religious history at a survey level, so a claim needing depth on a specific coastal culture or period needs a more focused specialist source.
