The Indo-Aryan Languages, edited by George Cardona and Dhanesh Jain, published by Routledge in 2003, is an edited scholarly volume surveying the Indo-Aryan language family, Sanskrit's descendants including Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati and dozens more, with each language's chapter written by a specialist in that particular language. Its strength is that specialist authorship per language, rather than one scholar generalizing across a family too large for any single expert to cover with equal depth. Its limit is exactly that division, the volume's quality and depth vary somewhat by chapter and contributor, so a claim about a specific language within the family should be traced to that language's own chapter and its author's particular scholarly standing rather than cited to the edited volume as an undifferentiated whole.
