The Legend of Miao-shan, Glen Dudbridge's 1978 scholarly study from Ithaca Press, London, published as Oxford Oriental Monographs No. 1, traces the textual history of the Miaoshan legend behind the bodhisattva Guanyin's popular cult in China. Its strength is that it is a focused academic monograph from an established Oxford series, confirmed against multiple independent bibliographic listings for its publisher and year. Its limit is that Dudbridge later revised his findings; a 2004 Oxford University Press edition and a 1999 Chinese edition (Taipei) exist and should be checked for his updated conclusions.
