The Linguistic Theories of N. Ja. Marr

The Linguistic Theories of N. Ja. Marr, Lawrence L. Thomas's 1957 scholarly study, University of California Publications in Linguistics volume 14, is the standard academic study of the Soviet linguist N. Ia. Marr's discredited Japhetic theory, which claimed a common origin for Caucasian, Semitic Hamitic and Basque languages and was promoted under Soviet ideological patronage. Its strength is that it is the standard academic study of this discredited theory and its political promotion. Its limit is its age, nearly seventy years; later historiography of Soviet science should be read alongside it for the theory's fuller political context.

Notes
Standard academic study of Soviet linguist N. Ia. Marr's discredited Japhetic theory, which claimed a common origin for Caucasian, Semitic-Hamitic and Basque languages and was promoted under Soviet ideological patronage. Squarely the Iapetus fact's own subject, this 18th-to-20th-century linguistic-classification episode.
