The Luminous Eye: The Spiritual World Vision of Saint Ephrem the Syrian

Sebastian Brock's The Luminous Eye, published by Cistercian Publications in 1992, is the standard scholarly study in English of Ephrem the Syrian, the fourth century hymn writer foundational to the Syriac Christian tradition, and of the madrasha, the theological hymn form he developed. Brock is a leading scholar of Syriac Christianity. Its strength is that it is a peer-reviewed academic monograph by the field's foremost specialist, still the standard English introduction to Ephrem's thought decades after publication. Its limit is that it focuses on Ephrem's theological vision specifically rather than the wider Syriac liturgical tradition that followed him, so a claim about later Syriac hymnography needs a source addressing that separately.
