Dauril Alden's The Making of an Enterprise: The Society of Jesus in Portugal, Its Empire, and Beyond, 1540 to 1750, Stanford University Press, 1996, is the authoritative modern academic history of the Jesuit order across the whole Portuguese empire, based on more than two decades of archival research across five continents. It covers the 1549 mission to Brazil under Manuel da Nobrega, who arrived at Salvador with governor-general Tome de Sousa and became the founding figure of the Jesuit mission there.
