The Mandaeans: The Last Gnostics

Edmondo Lupieri's The Mandaeans: The Last Gnostics is a major scholarly study of the Mandaean religion, the small Gnostic tradition centered on veneration of John the Baptist and surviving today mainly among Iraqi and Iranian diaspora communities, written by a specialist in ancient and late antique religious movements. Its authority comes from Lupieri's close engagement with Mandaean religious texts and historical sources tracing the tradition's origins and transmission, a genuinely difficult subject given the Mandaeans' own historical isolation and the limited outside scholarship devoted to them. As with much scholarship on small, historically obscure traditions, questions of Mandaean origins and their precise relationship to early Jewish, Christian and Gnostic movements remain areas of ongoing academic reconstruction rather than settled fact, and Lupieri's account represents a serious, well-regarded scholarly position within that continuing inquiry.
