The Music of the Moravian Church in America

The Music of the Moravian Church in America, edited by Nola Reed Knouse, is a scholarly collection of essays on the distinctive musical tradition of the Moravian Church in North America, written by specialists in Moravian history and musicology and published through the Moravian Music Foundation's own scholarly infrastructure. Its authority for the tradition's own musical practice, instrumental ensembles, choral music and the theology behind Moravian worship music, is strong, drawing on the denomination's unusually well-preserved archival music collections. As a volume produced substantially from within the tradition it describes, it should be read as an authoritative insider scholarly account of Moravian musical practice, valuable and detailed on its own subject rather than a comparative study situating Moravian music against other Protestant liturgical traditions.
