The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church

Vladimir Lossky's The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church, published by James Clarke in 1957, is a scholarly exposition of Eastern Orthodox theology written by a Russian emigre theologian, arguing that Orthodox mysticism and Orthodox dogmatic theology are not separate tracks but one integrated whole, centered on the distinction between God's unknowable essence and his knowable energies. Lossky wrote as a committed Orthodox theologian himself rather than an outside academic observer, giving the book real authority as a statement of how the tradition understands itself. Its strength is that insider theological precision, presenting apophatic, negative way, theology and the essence-energies distinction with the kind of internal coherence only a practicing theologian of the tradition could give it. Its limit is exactly that insider position, the book presents Orthodox theology as Lossky and his particular twentieth century Paris school understood it, a specific and influential but not uncontested reading within Orthodoxy itself, so a claim needing the tradition's full internal diversity needs sources beyond Lossky's own synthesis.
